When Slasher rose to power, Vexis and his sister Mira were the only ones who joined him, believing there was truth in his promise of riches and power. The rest of his pack didn't believe in Slasher, and were struck down for it. Vexis blames it on himself. This is actually why he's afraid of ghosts, as he believes his family will come back to haunt him.

Theres really nothing to explain about Mes'. Vex accidentally hatched her, and she's been with him ever since.
